Our solid-liquid separation solutions are an effective, proven, high capacity solution for dewatering coal tailings and mine wastewater. They are also an effective solution for fine coal recovery from flotation concentrate as well as from lean streams. The dewatering technology produces a cake with up to 70% dry solids by mass, which can then be used for co-disposal with coarse rejects.

How it works
Alfa Laval’s solid bowl decanter centrifuges have been specifically developed for large scale, heavy duty solid-liquid separation tasks in the mining and mineral industry.
A Solid Bowl Centrifuge (SBC) consists of a horizontal bowl with a scroll conveyor inside it which is together referred to as the rotating assembly. The assembly spins around its own axis at high speed, thereby generating high centrifugal force that enables separation of tailings solids from the liquid. The separated solids are scrolled out by the conveyor in the form of a dry solids cake whereas the clear liquid (centrate) overflows the weir plates located at the opposite end. How the technology works
Alfa Laval P2 and P3 decanter centrifuges are specifically designed to separate mineral ore slurries as well as tailings into solid phase and liquid phase. Separation takes place in a horizontal cylindrical bowl equipped with a screw conveyor. The feed slurry enters into the bowl through a stationary inlet tube and is then smoothly accelerated in the feed zone. Centrifugal forces of up to 3,500 G separate the solid particles from the liquid and the solids accumulate on the inner surface of the bowl.
The conveyor rotates in the same direction as the bowl, but at a different speed. This gives an axial thrust to the solid particles and the conveyor conveys those particles towards the conical end of the bowl. The solids leave the bowl through the solids discharge openings into the casing whereas the clarified liquid leaves the bowl by flowing over adjustable plate dams or power tubes into the casing.
