Coal Beneficiation
Alfa Laval’s range of equipment and proven expertise help optimise key processes in coal beneficiation and add further security to the storage of mine waste. Solid bowl centrifuges allow to recover and re-use large quantities of process water, which will help cut lifecycle cost, minimise environmental impact, save space and boost capacity as well.
Robust technology for coal tailings dewatering
- Excellent output (solids dryness) even in tough conditions
- Removes need for tailings dams
- Reduces footprint as well as capital and maintenance costs
- Contained process resulting in good and safe working conditions
- Strong local support and service presence in Australia
Our solid-liquid separation solutions are an effective, proven, high capacity solution for dewatering coal tailings and mine wastewater. They are also an effective solution for fine coal recovery from flotation concentrate as well as from lean streams. The dewatering technology produces a cake with up to 70% dry solids by mass, which can then be used for co-disposal with coarse rejects.
Applications
Tailings dewatering
The robust design and large capacity of Alfa Laval solid bowl centrifuges have proven the perfect solution for safe and secure dewatering of mining tailings.
Fine coal recovery
Innovations in mechanical separation technology has made fine coal recovery from flotation concentrate as well as from lean streams viable. Alfa Laval solid bowl centrifuges increase profitability by capturing ultra fine particles and allowing to reduce water use and recycle process water.
Customer success
Bloomfield Group Rix's Creek
The Rix’s Creek Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP), part of Australia's Bloomfield Group, set out to improve its onsite coal tailings management as part of its sustainability strategy. Tailings dewatering with Alfa Laval solid bowl centrifuges allows to reduce water and energy consumption and minimize the surface footprint of waste handling processes.

From the coal face
How to manage tailings storage facilities (TSF) is an ongoing challenge for Australia’s mining and minerals industry, from a risk mitigation and cost point of view. Alfa Laval Australia engineer and mining account manager, Harvey Foroush, explains how solid bowl centrifuge technology has evolved over time to provide an economically and technologically superior solution to dewater tailings and recover process water.
