Alfa Laval achieves carbon neutral status for Scope 2 emissions in New Zealand with the help of 100% renewable energy certification

Alfa Laval is proud to announce that its New Zealand operations have signed up to Meridian’s 100% Certified Renewable Energy product which matches Alfa Laval’s electricity consumption with Meridian’s 100% renewable energy generation on an annual basis. This allows the NZ operations to report their scope 2 electricity emissions as zero* which helps achieve carbon neutral status for their scope 2 electricity emissions.

According to Mikael Dahlgren, Acting Managing Director, Alfa Laval Oceania, Alfa Laval’s commitment to renewable energy recognises the vital role of business in addressing climate change.

“We’re not only committed to enabling customers to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint with clean tech and energy efficiency technologies, but want take the journey to sustainability together.  We’re proud to support a company that only generates its electricity from 100% renewable sources,” Mr Dahlgren says.

Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy product, introduced in NZ last year, follows the example of comparable markets overseas where businesses can purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs).The RECs are issued by the New Zealand Body for Certificate Issuance (NZECS) to Meridian for the renewable energy generated by its hydro stations and wind farms, these RECs are then allocated to businesses to cover their electricity consumption.

So, although Alfa Laval is receiving its electricity from the national grid which mingles electricity from Meridian’s renewable generation with every other source of New Zealand’s generation, the RECs verify renewable energy generation equivalent to their consumption on an annual basis.

Meridian’s Chief Customer Officer, Lisa Hannifin says there is a groundswell of demand among New Zealand businesses for renewable energy procurement.

“Our renewable energy generation should be a selling point for Kiwi businesses.  Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy product finally gives them the ability to leverage this when competing on the world stage and demonstrate their commitment to New Zealand’s low carbon future”.

Mr Dahlgren added that Alfa Laval has set itself the ambitious goal of powering 100% of operations in Oceania with renewables. “Our commitment to sustainability is a central element of our culture and value proposition,” he says.

Alfa Laval has been established in New Zealand since 1927. The company’s sales office and major service centre are located in Hamilton, serving a diverse customer base with sales and field service support across New Zealand.
